Welcome
to Idaho. Your drive through this narrow neck of Idaho will be brief but
exhilarating. You enter the state at about 2,000 feet elevation, make a
trial zoom up and over a 3,000 foot high pass 25 miles later and leave
the state by climbing over a 4,700 foot pass between two beautiful
6,000+ foot peaks. Northern Idaho is beautifully rugged and gracefully independent. This is 'can do' country and a visit to the city of Coeur d'Alene supplies ample evidence. Visitors' Center - just south of exit 13 of I-90 is the Coeur d'Alene Visitor and Convention Services' Visitors' Center. Exit onto N. 4th Street and just a half block south of the Interstate is a street angling off to the right. This is signed as 3rd Street but it takes you to N. 3rd. Continue south on N. 3rd for 4 blocks and the Visitors' Center is about mid block, on your right, at 1621 N. 3rd Street. Phone (toll free): 1-877-782-9232 - or - view their web site at Coeur d'Alene VCS. Fantasy in Lights - Almost no one wants to drive across the country on I-90 in mid Winter but, just in case you are here during the holiday season, you certainly do not want to miss their Fantasy in Lights show. We just though we'd mention it, just in case. Get specifics and schedules from the Visitors' Center. 1-877-782-9232. Tubbs Hill -
This small, solitary peak at the south end of town fronting Coeur
d'Alene Lake features a very nice, 3.2 mile walking trail which loops
around Tubbs Hill. Enjoy great views of the lake plus a pleasant stroll
through the woods. |
Coeur d'Alene
Lake Scenic Drive - Here is one of the most scenic drives in
the region. If eastbound on I-90, take exit 22 and head south on ID-97.
This is a good road and follows the east shore of Coeur d'Alene Lake to
ID-3 at the southern end. At ID-3, turn left and follow it north, past
another chain of lakes, back to I-90 at exit 34. Crystal Gold Mine - Tour a genuine, late 19th Century gold mine. Lost for over a century and then found by accident, it has been re-opened for tourists. This is a 30 minute tour conducted by experienced miners. Open year round, seven days a week, 9a-4p April through October; 10a-4p the rest of the year. Admission $10. Get the details at their web site: Gold Mine. Sixth Street
Melodrama - Stop in and relax while enjoying interesting, and frequently
hilarious, stories about pioneers and pioneer days in and around this
mining town. Even the building, oldest still standing in Wallace, is a
story - and you'll hear that, too. Hiawatha Rail Trail - view Getting There for details on how to get to the trail head and how to rent the bikes.
